Celebrating with Song: Honoring Jazz Appreciation Month with the Renaissance Orchestra

Join us for a free musical performance in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month!

Sunday, April 14

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Lemon Hill Mansion

Lemon Hill Drive
Philadelphia PA, 19130

Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and Renaissance Orchestra on Sunday, April 14 from 2:00-3:00 PM for a musical performance highlighting the “Underdogs of Jazz”.

Artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Ella Fitzgerald are household names, but how about Dakota Staton, Jimmy Heath, and Jaco Pastorius? These lesser-known, but certainly not less talented artists, also deserve recognition for their many contributions to the genre.

The Renaissance Orchestra, led by Leon Jordan Sr, is a special events band based in Philadelphia. For this performance, they will be bringing a seven-piece ensemble.

The event is sponsored by AFM Local 77 (the Philadelphia Musicians’ Union) and the Music Performance Trust Fund.

  • If it is nice out, we plan to have the concert outside on the lawn of Lemon Hill Mansion so please dress for the weather. There will be some seating available but attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs/blankets.
  • In the event of inclement or cold weather, the concert will be held inside and attendees will be notified via email. If this is the case, please know that there is limited seating that will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Doors will open at 1:45 PM. Also, there is a staircase leading into the mansion that is not ADA-accessible.
  • Light snacks and drinks will be available during the break (donations appreciated via cash or Venmo).
  • There is limited bathroom access so please plan accordingly.

There is plenty of parking in the lot behind Lemon Hill Mansion and along Lemon Hill Drive. As always, never leave valuables in our car! If traveling to Lemon Hill by public transit, the nearest stops are at 31st and Girard Ave and Art Museum Drive – both are a half-mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at 31st and Girard – also a half-mile from the start.
