Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row is one of the city’s most iconic sights. This glowing stretch of historic boathouses is a go-to backdrop for evening walks, skyline photos, and quiet moments by the water. Over time, the lights have also become a way to mark celebrations, recognize causes, and share stories across the city.
First illuminated in 1979, the lights have evolved alongside the city, from their original late-70s installation to an LED upgrade in 2005, and a full relighting in 2024. Today, thousands of LED lights create millions of color combinations, allowing the display to sparkle, fade, and even “dance” across the boathouses while highlighting their unique architecture.

Behind the scenes, Fairmount Park Conservancy manages the Boathouse Row lighting program, helping turn meaningful moments into unforgettable displays. Individuals, nonprofits, businesses, and community groups can all request custom lightings. Requests can mark a milestone, highlight a cause, or simply create a memorable experience.
John Sigmund is the Director of Sponsorships and Partnerships at Fairmount Park Conservancy and manages the Boathouse Row lighting program. John notes that the variety of requests is part of what makes the program special. “We’ve done over 170 lighting requests in the two years since the row has been relit,” he says. “A lighting request that stood out for me is when we had a family that wanted to do a gender reveal. They gathered about 50 family members, did a countdown, and it was a girl! So, Boathouse Row was pink for their girl. That was really a memorable one.”

Proceeds from lighting requests go directly toward maintaining and improving the lighting system. In other words, your display requests ensure that Boathouse Row continues to shine for years to come.
Whether you’re admiring the lights from afar or planning a display of your own, Boathouse Row remains an example of how history, innovation, and community engagement come together along the Schuylkill River.
