Building Community Through Youth Sports

by Sarah Peterson on June 9, 2026

For many young people, sports provide early life lessons that last well beyond the playing field. They provide opportunities to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and form lasting connections with mentors and peers. In South Philadelphia, the Sigma Sharks Youth Organization has spent years creating those opportunities through sports, mentorship, and community engagement. Fairmount Park Conservancy also supports youth sports organizations through community partnerships and field days in local parks and recreation spaces.

A Mission Rooted in Service

The Sigma Sharks Youth Organization traces its roots to the Nu Sigma fraternity, a Black collegiate fraternity with a strong commitment to community service.

“Our organization encompasses numerous sports, mentorship, and opportunities to be a pillar in the neighborhood that we all grew up in,” says Anthony Meadows, president of the Sigma Sharks Youth Organization.

That commitment to service remains central to the organization’s mission, helping create positive opportunities for young people both on and off the field.

Why Youth Sports Matter

For Coach Anthony, youth sports are a mechanism through which kids develop skills that extend far beyond athletics.

“Youth sports are important because they give kids a foundation for working together and being part of something bigger than themselves,” he says. “It’s a big part of developing character.”

Sports also help young people build confidence. Whether it’s mastering a football skill, learning a cheer, or making a free throw, Coach Anthony has seen firsthand how accomplishment can shape a child’s future.

“That accomplishment allows them to gain confidence and transfer that confidence into all aspects of their lives,” he says.

The Power of Community

Coach Anthony recalls one young person from Wilson Park who faced difficult circumstances but found support through the Sigma Sharks community. With coaches and mentors looking out for him, the youth went on to become a successful high school and college athlete, and, Coach Anthony says, “an even better person.”

Stories like this highlight the impact that strong community networks can have on young people’s lives, both on and off the field.

Investing in the Future

Coach Anthony argues that recreation centers, parks, and youth programs are essential investments in the next generation.

“If you don’t invest in youth through education and extracurricular activities, what are we producing?” he asks. “These recreation centers that kids and coaches utilize are paramount to the success of not just Philadelphia, but the nation.”

This spirit of community is celebrated each year at Shark Day, the organization’s annual community picnic at Smith Recreation Center, featuring food, games, and activities for local families.
