This summer, Fairmount Park Conservancy staff and volunteer leaders took part in a Trail Analysis and Maintenance training led by Appalachian Mountain Club. Over two days, our team learned about a variety of trail topics and common tools for maintenance, then went to the Trolley Trail in West Fairmount Park to practice on-site assessment and maintenance strategies.

Like any park amenity, trails require consistent observation and care. Erosion, obstacles, informal shortcuts, and other challenges are common in a dynamic nature setting. Regularly caring for trails protects the surrounding environment as well as the people using the trail. Thanks to this workshop, our staff and volunteer leaders have more knowledge to bring into the field – and to share with others!

The training workshop was funded in part by WeConservePA and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Pennsylvania Recreational Trails Program funded through the Federal Highway Administration.
