Second Saturday: Greenland Nursery and Organic Recycling Center Tour

Learn about the life cycle of a tree in the park with a tour of two West Fairmount Park gems.

Date

Saturday, September 12

Time

10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location

Organic Recycling Center

Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation on September 12 from 10 AM-12 PM for a tour of two West Fairmount Park gems – Greenland Nursery and the Organic Recycling Center, home to the Reforestation Hub.

We’ll start off exploring the trails of West Fairmount Park with a roughly one-mile hike along parts of the historic Trolley Trail and the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Course. After the hike, we’ll learn all about the fascinating life cycle of a tree in the park with a visit to Greenland Nursery, where plants are grown to support park natural area restoration projects, followed by a visit to the Organic Recycling Center, where fallen trees and piles of leaves can find new life as mulch, woodchips, or compost. As of 2024, the Organic Recycling Center is also home to the Reforestation Hub, a first-of-its-kind sawmill and lumber yard operated by PowerCorpsPHL.

We will tour both facilities, spending roughly 30 minutes at each.

TICKETS: Free**, donations appreciated. Registration is required.

**We are proud to be able to offer these programs for free. However, there is limited capacity for many programs. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend.
