MLK Day Volunteer Project at West Fairmount Park

Join us on MLK Day to help remove invasive species and pick up trash at Parkside Evans Playground

Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation staff on Monday, January 19, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM for a volunteer workday celebrating MLK Day at Parkside Evans Playground.

Depending on volunteer turnout, we may split into smaller groups to work at nearby locations, including the Parkside Tunnel and the steps to the Mann area.

Together, we will work on:

  • Removing invasive species
  • Trash pick-up

We will provide all the tools, supplies, and materials for the workday, including gloves.

Parkside Evans Fields is a 4-acre site located along Parkside Avenue in West Fairmount Park. The site features a playground, a spray ground, and a pump track.

EVENT TIMELINE:

9:00 AM – Volunteer check-in
9:10 AM – Project overview & tool safety
9:20 AM – Begin workday
11:45 AM – Wrap-up workday
12:00 PM – Big thank you & group photo!

MEETING LOCATION:

5300 Parkside Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19131. Look for our green tent when you arrive at the parking lot.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

  • In general, please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We strongly recommend wearing long pants that cover your ankles and long sleeves to protect your arms.
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes like boots or sneakers are required (no ballet flats, flip-flops, or sandals).
  • Volunteers are also required to wear gloves while working. Gloves will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.
  • We will provide bug spray, sunblock, hand sanitizer, and wipes.
  • You may also want to consider wearing a hat or sunglasses.
  • Please bring a reusable water bottle. We will provide jugs for refilling. We will also provide snacks.

PARKING/GETTING THERE:

  • Look for the green Fairmount Park Conservancy tent on-site
  • There is plenty of free parking available. Please don’t leave valuables or anything visible in your vehicles.
  • There are no bike racks, but we can keep your bike with us to keep an eye on it.
