ViewCreative placemaking is an emerging field in cities, suburbia and rural communities. While definitions vary, at the heart is a belief in the power of arts and culture to strengthen a place’s identity and to empower residents to participate in change. As Fairmount Park Conservancy incorporates creative placemaking into our mission, a number of readings, toolkits and case studies have inspired and informed us. ViewThe Village is a hive of creative output that supports the aspirations of the community through opportunities for self-expression. The Village inspires people to be agents of change through programs that engage youth, preserve heritage and respect the environment.
ViewArtPlace America is the foremost organizational advocate, patron and documentarian for creative placemaking in the United States. Their library includes videos as well as Anne Gadwa and Ann Markusen’s seminal 2010 white paper on creative placemaking.
ViewThis searchable database catalogues the grantees of the NEA’s Our Town grant program, which supports creative placemaking projects. Each project is described in full and richly illustrated.
ViewLISC is a national network of local offices, including Philadelphia, which offers expertise, strategy and capital to make low income communities thrive. Creative placemaking is a central part of their extensive toolkit.
ViewCreative Exchange is a national platform sharing artful ideas for stronger communities. Launched by Springboard for the Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, Creative Exchange offers stories, toolkits and links to artists making change in their communities.
