Time

12:00pm - 1:00pm

Spring has sprung and things are sprouting at the Horticulture Center’s Greenhouse & Gardens, thanks to Farm Philly and Penn State Master Gardeners’ Program! Join us on Zoom for a special virtual behind-the-scenes tour of the green thumbs in West Fairmount Park growing plants with a purpose.

We’ll begin with a peek at a part of the greenhouse the public doesn’t normally see: the propagation nursery, managed by Farm Philly, a partnership between Fairmount Park Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks & Rec. Meet the dedicated Farm Philly team- Program Coordinator EmmaKate Martin and staff. We’ll tour wall-to-wall tables that nurture future food for many urban gardens through the Community Propagation Program, which allows dozens of individual gardeners and community organizations in the city to rent table space. There are 18 community gardens on park land where over 450 gardeners rent garden plots and grow food to share with their families & neighbors, to be sold at farm stands, or donated to food pantries. Many of them use this space to get the season started and we’ll meet a couple of these growers to learn about their unique community gardens.

Next we’ll meet the green team from the Philadelphia County Penn State Master Gardeners’ Program. We’ll start with a visit to their propagation area inside the Greenhouse. Then we’ll head outside to take a tour of their award-winning Edible Demonstration Garden. We’ll also get a preview of what’s planned for their annual Garden Day & Plant Sale on Sunday, April 24, 2022! The public is invited to shop for a variety of affordable seedlings and native plants with beautiful blooms, as well as enjoy gardening workshops & demonstrations throughout the day. As always, there will be a Q & A at the end.

This webinar will be recorded for later viewing and will be shared out with registrants.
