Update 4/11/18: This event is SOLD OUT. There will be no on-site registration at our meeting spot.
Update 4/9/18: This bike ride has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 12 instead of the original Monday, April 9 date!
Join us for a free and fun pop up bike ride in Fairmount Park to see some of the park’s beautiful cherry blossoms at a casual pace.
The bike ride will end at Shofuso Japanese House & Garden for a chance to check out their Sake Garden (pay as you go) as part of the weeklong Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. Bike ride participants can visit inside Shofuso ($12 admission fee) upon arrival or if you are a member of Fairmount Park Conservancy, Shofuso or Association for Public Art you can get in for free! You do not have to pay to access the Sake Garden.
In case of inclement weather we will reschedule the ride.
DATE AND TIME: Thursday, April 12 at 6:00 PM. Ride will depart at 6:15 PM
MEETING LOCATION: The front (south side//where the “Rocky steps” are) of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (near the Indego station there – where you can pick up a bike if you need one).
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE RIDE: Our friends at Philly Bike Tour Co will lead the bike ride alongside folks from Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia and Association for Public Art who will share interesting facts about the cherry blossoms and sculptures along the way. The ride will end at the Sake Garden near Shofuso for pay-as-you go food and beverages.
ABOUT THE SAKE GARDEN (pay as you go): A pop-up beer garden presented by Parks on Tap, is Philadelphia’s take on the Japanese tradition of cherry blossom picnics. Enjoy beer, cocktails, and Asian fusion fare beneath the trees in Fairmount Park.
MORE ABOUT CHERRY TREES IN PHILADELPHIA: It was in the spirit of international friendship that the Japanese Government gave 1,600 flowering trees including cherry trees to Philadelphia in 1926 in honor of the 150th anniversary of American Independence. In 1998, The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia continued this legacy and began a ten-year, 1,000 tree planting campaign, which was completed in 2007.
