Join artist Cesar Viveros on Thursday, October 19 from 3:00-6:00 PM for a community painting collaboration. The collaboration will take place in FDR Park to prepare the Día de los Muertos ofrenda (altar) for Saturday’s Gran Fiesta de los Muertos. Come anytime between 3:00–6:00 PM to meet the artist, learn more about Día de los Muertos and Mexican cultural traditions, and grab a brush to get involved!
This is a free drop-in workshop. Come anytime and stay for as long as you’d like. Complimentary drinks and snacks will be available. RSVP is encouraged since we have limited space and materials. Painting takes place outdoors so dress appropriately (it will be about 60° f).
LOCATION: on the south lawn (loop roadside) of the FDR Community Clubhouse
PARKING/GETTING THERE: If driving, it is best to arrive via the 20th Street and Pattison Avenue entrance and park in the lot next to the Community Clubhouse. As always, never leave valuables in your car. If taking SEPTA, take the Broad Street Line to NRG Station. There is an Indego Bike Share station there as well.
MORE INFO: Día de los Muertos day of remembrance for those who have died, is traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 in Mexico. Its origins can be traced to pre-colonial Mexico when it was believed that the souls of dead loved ones returned to their families once a year so that their lives could be celebrated. Today, families commemorate the day by creating “ofrendas”, the Spanish word for offerings that colloquially is used to mean an altar. The altars are decked with lighted candles, cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, photos, special food, and whatever the dead enjoyed when they were alive.
